  • Dickran Atamian | Sound Espressivo

< Back Dickran Atamian Pianist, artist manager Learn More Videos About Atamian’s career evolved from a highly-excitable young artist into the maturity of a statesman of the instrument where a prodigious technical prowess was fused with rare musical acumen to deliver electrifying performances and landmark recordings. In 1975, Atamian won 1st prize at the 50th Anniverary Naumburg Competitions at Carnegie Hall at the age of 19 – the youngest person along with William Kapell and Robert Mann , ever to win that competition. For most artists, a win at an international level competition changes their career; for Atamian it changed the music industry. The subsequent Carnegie Hall recital that followed featured a new solo piano transcription of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring by New York composer Sam Raphling. This daring new work for the piano was met with such universal critical acclaim that RCA Red Seal immediately signed Atamian to record the new transcription and a host of other works for their first digital release. Recently re-released on Delos, noted music critic Allan Ulrich writing for the San Francisco Examiner proclaimed: “Twenty years later, these remain 31 of the most exciting minutes of piano playing ever recorded.” He incidentally performed the only triple world-premiere [Carnegie Hall, RCA and PBS] in musical history of any major musical cornerstone 20th century piano work. A tour of the Soviet Union and a series of nationally televised PBS specials followed including “ An Evening with Atamian ” which won ”Best of PBS” in 1981 and “ Atamian Salutes Kapell ”. (Both specials are available on YouTube.) William Kapell’s venerable career and tragic death inspired Atamian throughout much of his own tumultuous career. He included Kapell’s signature concerto, the Khachaturian Piano concerto in his repertoire and recorded the work with the Seattle Symphony. With a major competition win, a landmark recording, and a tour of the Soviet Union, Atamian quickly established himself as a force to reckon with in the piano world performing nearly 200 concerts with orchestras including performances with the Cleveland Orchestra under Lorin Maazel, the Detroit Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Pops, the Phoenix Symphony, the Seattle Symphony, major orchestras in Poland, Russia, Mexico, and South Korea, and orchestra tours with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He worked with some of the leading conductors in the industry including Gerard Schwarz, Erich Leinsdorf, Eduardo Mata, David Zinman, Sergio Comissiona, James DePreist, Gustav Meier, Victor Allessandro, Verner Torkanowsky, Jens Nygaard, Alan Hovanhess, Grzegorz Nowak, Enrique Batiz, Michael Morgan, and Joann Faletta. Adding to the list of orchestral appearances, Atamian performed on many leading recital series in the world’s great music capitols, among them Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall, the 92nd Street Y, Town Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, the Kennedy Center and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, Symphony Hall in Boston, Grady Gammage Auditorium in Phoenix, Salle Gaveau in Paris, Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Victoria Hall in Geneva, Town Hall in Sidney and the Great Hall in Moscow. He has also performed at the Aspen, Marlboro, Chautauqua and Ravinia festivals. His other recordings include the Prokofiev Third and Khachaturian Piano Concertos with Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony on Delos, CDs of the Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition, selective works of Chopin and four Beethoven Sonatas. Atamian has emerged as manager Atamian and in that role he is known under the trade name Jack Price who is the founder of Price Attractions , a concert management headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma with affiliates in several cities. Atamian lives there where he is actively engaged in the careers of the artists he now represents and in the lives of his two children, Sean and Annarose. Previous Next

  • Michelle Kim | Sound Espressivo

< Back Michelle Kim Violin/Electric Violin Learn More Videos About Music is my life path. Each person has the power and responsibility to use their talent and skills to help others. Through music, I hope to unite and inspire people to understand and improve the world that we all live in. I was born in Seoul, South Korea and started piano lessons when I was five before switching to violin. My family moved to southern California and I made my solo orchestra debut at age 10, playing Vivaldi's Violin Concerto with the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra. Throughout my high school years, I studied music at the Colburn School and, in the summers, at Idyllwild Arts. But I promised my family – and myself – that I’d give up the violin for something more practical. I majored in Statistics at the University of California at Berkeley, but continued violin lessons with San Francisco Symphony members. I played in the UC Berkeley Symphony for four years and won the music department’s concerto competition twice. And I received the Alfred Hertz Memorial Scholarship to study music independently. I realized that I could not give up my passion for music. I decided to give my everything to becoming a professional musician. After my Berkeley graduation, I moved to New York to study on scholarship for two years at the Manhattan School of Music with Laurie Carney of the American String Quartet. Immediately after graduating with a Master’s Degree, I won the first violin section position at the Washington National Opera Orchestra under Placido Domingo at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. My dream was coming true. Since choosing my path, I’ve attended the Aspen Music Festival, the Salzburg Mozarteum Academy Festival, Music and Sound at the Banff Centre, and the New York String Quartet Seminar. In 2015, I gave a recital at the In Spiritum International Festival in Porto, Portugal. As a member of Musica Aperta , I’ve introduced and taught classical music to young students in the DC Public Schools. I have also given private lessons at the Holton Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland. In 2016, I spoke on “Everything is a Remix of Creativity and Innovation” to a Social Entrepreneurship class at George Washington University, and in 2017 gave a chamber music master class at Georgetown University. At Carnegie Hall, I was guest concertmaster of the New England Symphonic Ensemble in the world premiere performance of Oh My Son . In 2012, I played with visiting musicians from Tunisia to commemorate the Jasmine Revolution in their country. This inspired me to start Culture Saves , a humanitarian organization that restores hope and promotes peace in troubled areas through the arts. In 2014, I performed for then Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and then South Korean Defense Minister Han Min-koo at the US Institute of Peace. Working closely with world-renowned tenor Placido Domingo, my mentor who was Director of the Washington National Opera, and with world-class musicians at the Kennedy Center further inspired me to grow as a musician and to find my own voice. I started to compose and arrange music and got my first electric violin in 2013. Playing the electric violin and creating my own sounds have transformed me. I’ve performed at the International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings, at the National Association of Health Underwriters Annual Conference, as well as at a Dewey Beach, Maryland dance party playing Electronic Dance Music with a DJ. At the Italian Embassy in Washington, I’ve played in three annual Becky's Fund Walk This Way Fashion Shows raising $440,000 to stop domestic violence. In 2017, I performed my own piece Con Spero at the United Nations in New York. Later that year, I founded and now lead Electric Fantasy, a six-piece instrumental band with multi-genre musicians from the Washington National Opera. Since its inception, Electric Fantasy has performed twice at the Kennedy Center, and has been the featured solo band with the Miami Music Festival Orchestra for the 2018 July 4th Pops Concert in Florida and the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra for the 2019 - 2020 Season Opening Night Celebration Concert in Annapolis. In 2020, I’ll be performing the Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 with the Mclean Symphony Orchestra. My journey continues…. Previous Next
