We are a classical music competition so please choose repertoire accordingly, but we do not request specific pieces or time periods. Choose whatever represents your artistic merit best Do I have to play the same pieces in all rounds? There are no specific requirements for that. You can play the same pieces; or you can play completely different program; or you can play a combination of both. You decide everything about your repertory yourself. What makes this competition unlike any other? It's fully virtual with many innovative elements you can view above in the slides and boxes. Our Broadcasts are made using TV technology (NOT Zoom!) How do I know I'm good enough to compete? All levels are welcome to compete! All of these are widely available My teacher is one of the judges, can I still apply to compete? Absolutely! Your performance will be adjudicated by the panel which will EXCLUDE your current and previous teachers Do I have to win first place, to receive any prizes? Not at all! Prizes are offered by distinguished companies with vast experience in promoting performing arts which are experts in classical music. Each company will award their prize(s) to contestant(s) of their own choice. Their decisions may or may not match those of the judges'. Some companies may choose to not award their prizes Will my teacher get recognition? Of course! Your teachers shared their knowledge and inspiration with you! the Competition will recognize teachers and schools of every contestant on the Teachers page. < Back Previous Enrique Graf Next WATCH VIDEO Internationally acclaimed pianist Enrique Graf is one the world’s premiere virtuosos equally sought after as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher. He has been variously described as an “assured and technically complete pianist” (The Washington Post) and “one of the best interpreters of his generation” (El Pais), who plays with “fiery virtuosity” (The New York Times). “If you ever have the opportunity to hear Graf, do yourself a favor and go” (Newark Star Ledger). Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Graf began studying piano at the age of four with his mother. After winning all of the national competitions in Uruguay, he was awarded a full scholarship from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and the Organization of American States to study with Leon Fleisher. Graf won First Prize in the William Kapell International Piano Competition, the National Ensemble Piano Competition and the East and West International Competition in New York. He has given recitals all over the world and has been featured as soloist with such orchestras as the Baltimore, Indianapolis, New Jersey, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Richmond, Florida, West Virginia, Illinois, Flagstaff, Macon, Augusta, Greenville, Charleston, New York City and Jupiter Symphonies, the Symphony of the Americas, the National Chamber Orchestra, the Illinois Chamber Orchestra, the American Chamber Orchestra, the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, Sinfonia da Camara, South Carolina Philharmonic, Florida Virtuosi Orchestra, the Puerto Rico Symphony, the Montevideo Philharmonic, the Lviv Philharmonic, the Moscow Philharmonic, the Janacek Philharmonic in the Czech Republic, and the national orchestras of Ukraine, Chile, Uruguay, Peru and Colombia. He has performed concertos by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, all five by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Poulenc, Gershwin, De Falla, Turina, Shostakovich, and Lee Hoiby. He gave the world premiere of Florencia Di Concilio’s Piano Concerto, Edward Hart’s Tidal Concerto and performed and recorded for Naxos a concerto by Leonardo Balada. An all Poulenc CD with the Charleston Symphony was a pick of the month by the Sunday London Times and was awarded five stars in Classic CD. His debut recording Enrique Graf plays Bach was called “An end to the discussion of whether or not Bach should be played on the piano” by Paul Hume of the Washington Post. Other recordings of Mozart Sonatas, Mendelssohn and Bach Variations, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, the Liszt Sonata, the Grieg Concerto, Edward Hart’s Tidal Concerto, Gershwin’s Concerto in F and two Beethoven Concertos have received such praise as “ideal performances” (Fanfare). His latest CDs include a “live” recital with works by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Debussy and Tosar and one with violinist Cecilia Penades with works by Piazzolla, Villa Lobos, Guastavino, Ponce, Fabini and Ginastera. Graf taught for fourteen years at the Peabody Preparatory, became chairman of the piano department and received the Director’s Award for Outstanding Teaching. He created an outstanding piano program at the College of Charleston where he was awarded the Distinguished Research Award and named University Artist in Residence. Graf was also Artist Lecturer at Carnegie Mellon University and taught at the Charleston Academy of Music. His students have won many national and international competitions. He has been a member of the jury in competitions all over the world and has given master classes at Yale University, Oberlin and Eastman Conservatories, the Shanghai and Kiev Conservatories, the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts, Korea’s National University, Federal University of Sao Paolo and many other schools throughout the world. Alexander is regularly featured as pianist and composer at festivals and concert series such as Makrokosmos Project Festival in Portland, Oregon, Pianoforte Series at the Asheville Art Museum and Klavierfestival-Lindlar, where he has been invited for concerts and lectures. Alexander has performed cutting-edge new music by composers from the United States and abroad as well as his own works at the Oregon Bach Festival and John Donald Robb Composers Symposiums, Cascadia Composers (NACUSA) and the Schultz Seminar at Stanford. Alexander has given masterclasses throughout the United States, at UFRGS Conservatory in Porto Alegre, Brazil and at DTKV and Klavierfestival-Lindlar in Germany. The event will stream to multiple social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Twitch and LinkedIn. Virtual Concert Halls will take the 18-hour live Internet Web stream from 5:00 a.m. to 11 p.m. CT from the Institute’s gallery and distribute it live to major social media platforms. Virtual Concert Halls streams live events from all over the world and are experts at streaming simultaneously on multiple social media platforms. Throughout the broadcast, news anchors will interview a wide variety of people who are close to the situation in Ukraine including historians, scholars, lawmakers, young Ukrainian refugees who recently arrived in Chicago, among others. UNICEF has been in Ukraine for 25 years—and it is on the ground now, delivering safe water, health and hygiene supplies, blankets, warm clothes and psycho-social care to children and their families. Security is especially crucial during this time when many children and youth are separated from their families which leaves them in indescribably vulnerable. Donations are accepted any time before, during, and after the live stream. According to a recent statement by UNICEF USA, two million children have now been forced to flee Ukraine, as the war rages on. “The situation inside Ukraine is spiraling,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “As the number of children fleeing their homes continues to climb, we must remember that every single one of them needs protection, education, safety and support.” In a joint statement, Motria Melnyk, President of the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art and Marta Farion, Vice President said, "The war in Ukraine is breaking all of our hearts and so the opportunity to make our facility the staging area for this amazing fundraising effort was enthusiastically welcomed by our board and staff." He was invited to perform in Festival Cervantino (Mexico), accompanied by Kaoshiung Sinfonica in Taiwan, Russian Philharmonic in Bilbao, Spain. In 2021 developed a Mastercourse of Tango for violinists for the digital platform iClassical Academy . In 2009 he founded the chamber ensemble "Estación Buenos Aires" with which he has toured throughout the country and recently completed the recording and world premiere in 2022 of the two "Modern String Quartets" by the Oscar-winning composer, Lalo Schifrin, and dedicated to the ensemble.
