Derek Zhang, a sophomore at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek, CA, excels in both music and sports. A first-prize winner of the North California Young Talents Competition, he has performed as a soloist with the East Bay Chamber Orchestra and participates in ASTACAP examinations. Derek toured Europe last summer as first violinist with the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra and is currently first violin in the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra. An accomplished pianist as well, he has earned several awards in piano competitions.
