Meet the Conductor Previous Next Giorgi Kerelashvili, artistic director of the Tbilisi State Chamber Orchestra, also known as the Georgian Sinfonietta orchestra. “We are the first and only orchestra in the Caucasus region to have acquired the status of a Baroque orchestra in 2012,” Kerelashvili shares at the outset of the conversation with this writer, beaming with pride. For the uninitiated, Baroque refers to a post-Renaissance style originating in 17th century Europe, that stands out from modern classical music in its attention to ornamentation, improvisation and stylistic diversity; much like Indian classical music, one could say. “Before the Classical period introduced the ideals of structure, rhythm and harmonies, Baroque implemented instruments of organic origin, and a style that sounded just as organic,”. While the style remains the ensemble’s forte, the director reminds us that its repertoire is expansive, encompassing modern classical and Romantic styles. It was formally recognized by the Russian Musical Society as a conservatoire later that year. The original building was designed by Aleksander Szymkiewicz and built in 1901-05. Unlike most buildings of the same style in the given period, the conservatoire's column decorated main portal is not centrally located. Rather, along with the main facade it is built near the left corner of the building in order for it to face the main entrance from the Rustaveli Avenue . The style of the building is eclectic in nature. While original two-story building was built with elements of renaissance and baroque , the exterior of the present four-story building is neoclassical and somewhat less ornate. The exterior displays the statue of Anton Rubinstein , a Russian pianist and composer who in 1891 donated an entire income from one of his concerts for the opening of the original conservatoire building. The main auditorium and the smaller auditorium are the two auditoriums in the building. The conservatoire's tiny auditorium is renowned for its ornately decorated walls. The main auditorium also holds an organ from the Alexander Schuke factory in Potsdam, Germany, installed in 1963. Today the conservatoire teaching staff includes about 200 professors. There are about 400 students. Cultural events taking place at the Conservatoire include: music forums, national competitions, international symposia and scientific conferences, master classes, chamber and symphony concerts and student opera performances at the Conservatoire Opera Studio. Since 1995 the State Conservatoire has aligned itself with the two-step European Educational System of studies. Since 2006 the Tbilisi State Conservatoire has become a member of the European Association of Conservatories. From 2005 the Conservatoire joined the Bologna Process with its international student transfer and credit system.

As support from her administrative life created space for her passion, the two grew into an extraordinary opportunity when she later became the Ryan White Program Coordinator for NOVA Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine, Fort Lauderdale, FL. She supervised management of a fourteen chair, HIV/AIDS Dental Clinic funded solely from the Ryan White Fund of HRSA. This unique and powerful experience ultimately led Lisa back to teaching and the arts, where she has proudly taught voice at SUNY Fredonia for five years, and has served as Executive Director of the Western New York Chamber Orchestra for two seasons. Lisa currently resides in Erie, PA. With her husband of 30 years, tenor, Brent Weber. Previous Next

- Alla Lowery | Sound Espressivo
< Back Alla Lowery Piano/Composer Learn More Videos About Alla Lowery (Krymskaya) started her classical piano education at the age of 4 under her mother, Svetlana Krymskaya , who is remembered as a professional concert pianist and accompanist, a college professor, and a brilliant musicologist on the concert stage, on radio and TV in Russia for over forty years. Alla’s first performance on the local TV studio in Kazan, Russia, Tataria, took place in 1964, when she was 6 years old. At the ages of 10 and 12 Alla was on TV again as a performer, artist and composer. Later in her life Alla was featured on TV a number of times as an author of educational programs as well as a performer. A.Lowery's Resume - Download 2020-2021 MHIMA Awards nomination Alla Lowery earned her bachelor’s degree in classical piano from Kazan State Music College in 1977, and master’s degree in classical piano from Kazan State Conservatory (Academy) in 1983 (the same State musical institution the famous Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina graduated from). After graduation she worked for about 15 years as a professor of classical piano performance and ensemble, accompaniment, and piano pedagogy at the State music colleges in Russia and Lithuania, concurrently working as an accompanist there as well. She played in chamber ensembles, accompanied solo instruments, vocalists and choirs for more than two decades. She worked 10 years at Yarolavl Governor’s Academic Symphony Orchestra as a full-time pianist and chief manager of its chamber ensembles. In 1997 the orchestra purchased Ensoniq KT88, and that was Alla’s first close encounter with a synthesizer. Just around that time Alla had a part-time job as a music teacher at the School for Little Ones (a subdivision of the Provincial College of Yaroslavl) , a very loved and famous in the city preschool institution for children aged 3-6. Her first experiments at composing and arranging on the synthesizer were designed for her work with the children at the school. Quirky, cartoonish and children’s music still has a special place in her heart. In late 2000ths, after more than 30 years of successful career of a classical pianist in Russia and Lithuania, Alla Lowery started working extensively with MIDI and samples, and it eventually became her next specialty. Her life-long professional experience and practical knowledge of the sound of acoustic instruments helped her with mimicking them in MIDI. She has become proficient in working with high-end sample libraries in Cubase. Since immigrating to the USA in 2005, Alla Lowery continues her work as a private piano teacher, a composer, and a MIDI engineer, taking interest in computers, and producing videos on the side. During last years she has created dozens of pieces in different styles, including a Suite for oboe and symphony orchestra, a number of pieces for piano duet and solo, a collection of pieces for ballet accompanists “The Elements of Ballet”, renditions of famous classical compositions, pieces for oboe, strings, etc. In 2013 Alla Lowery’s Siciliana for oboe and orchestra was performed an the Chamber Hall of Ryazan State Philharmonic, Russia. In 2014 Alla Lowery worked with Music Mind Games , making music and designing sounds for Rhythm Solitaire app . Alla collaborated with a number of American musicians and groups, such as TransAtlantic Duo , Capital Kapustnik , Vladimir Gamarnik and Yulia Petrachuk , among others, creating custom renditions and medleys of various pieces. Alla Lowery, now a naturalized citizen of the USA, lives in North Potomac, Maryland, USA with her husband Charles and sons Eugene and Kirill.Sources in Russian: http://svetkrym.esy.es/daughter.htm https://www.chayka.org/authors/alla-krymskaya-lauri Previous Next
- Adrianne Greenbaum | Sound Espressivo
< Back Adrianne Greenbaum Flute/Klezmer/Baroque Learn More Videos About ADRIANNE GREENBAUM , pioneer of the klezmer flute tradition, recognized as the “Queen of Klezmer Flute”, Professor of Flute at Mount Holyoke College, is the foremost purveyor of the klezmer flute tradition. Having reached International acclaim as both a klezmer and classical flutist, Adrianne performs on modern, traverso and 19th c. flutes. She has performed in many national and international festivals and conventions: as soloist with orchestra at the National Flute Convention, solo recitals at the British Flute Convention, full concerts in the KlezMore Festival in Vienna, tours in US, Scotland and Poland with a variety of narrated themes that are both informative and highly entertaining, with dancing in the aisles being a must. Adrianne Greenbaum is a nationally acclaimed flutist and clinician, performing on historical instruments of the 18th and 19th centuries and modern Boehm system. Having received her upper level degrees from the Oberlin College Conservatory and Yale University School of Music, she has held professorships for five decades at prestigious colleges and universities previous to Mount Holyoke, those being Smith, Yale and Wesleyan. With performances of both klezmer and classical concerts across the globe, her career ranks amongst the finest musicians of her time. She began her career as a classical musician, maintaining her presence in the field performing recitals at universities, conventions national and local – Brittish, National Flute Association, New York to name a few - and as an orchestral musician as Principal of both the New Haven Symphony (recently retired) and Orchestra New England. Highlights of her presence in the classical arena included many years performing with the New York City Ballet Orchestra, performances with New York’s Mostly Mozart Festival, and as Principal flutist with Berlin Ballet at the Met. She can be heard in recordings of her own solo album “Sounds of America” as well as those produced by Koch International and Music Masters labels. As a klezmer flutist Adrianne has been crowned The Queen of Klezmer Flute, thanks to both a press comment and public opinion. Rising to prominence early on with her first album “FleytMuzik”, performing with stellar musicians Cookie Segelstein, Josh Horowitz and Marty Confurius, attention was quickly and easily drawn to Greenbaum as the foremost exponent and pioneer of the klezmer flute tradition, a position held in high regard by her esteemed colleagues. Audiences as well have come to truly appreciate the instrument’s special qualities because of such high level performing on the long-forgotten instrument of the ensembles of the past. Her FleytMuzik albums, with the above-mentioned musicians and more recently with Pete Rushefsky, Michael Alpert and Jake Shulman-Ment, as well as an earlier recording Family Portrait, produced by her first klezmer ensemble “Klezical Tradition”, have been firmly placed in the core of the klezmer output of the late 20th and now 21st centuries. Her latest recording project Farewell to the Homeland: Poyln gained an appreciation from the public and from colleagues alike for connecting early klezmer bands of Poland – in particular the Frandt kapelye of Dubiecko, Poland – and continues to be presented in narrated form in concert. Other themed concerts with FleytMuzik include a narrated A Khasene far di Zisn Kale and her touring show Tartan, Baroque and Klezmer! A recently added klezmer project is the formation of “di naye froyen kapelye” a super group of five prominent North American women in klezmer, with Cookie Segelstein, Marilyn Lerner, Susan Watts and Lauren Brode. Adrianne Adrienne Greenbaum flute klezmer klezmerflute classical professor Mount Holyoke College Photo by Lloyd Wolf ADRIANNE has involved herself with teaching at all levels, from the day-one experience of flute playing, to coaching professionals on the fine distinction of colorful tone production, period performance practice and making music come alive.
